Alt-Who (The 1960s Dalek Movies)

This month, we’re diving into the two Dalek movies from the 1960s, starring Peter Cushing as the Doctor. They are, of course, Dr Who and the Daleks & Daleks’ Invasion of Earth 2150 AD.

Before that, we kick things off with the usual mix of news and short topics you’ve come to expect. Then, after the movie chat, we open the mailbag for a ton of feedback from our listeners on a number of topics.

Enjoy, dear listener.

  1. Excellent discussion of two very fun pieces of Who media! I really enjoyed these movies; If the original episodes are a fine vintage wine enjoyed over a candelit supper, then these movies are 2 cold beers on a warm summer’s evening. Both equally enjoyable and both wildly different experiences. A change I really enjoyed was Susan being portrayed by an actual child, rather than the very adult Carol Ann Ford. Of course, the actress portraying her likely went a long way towards that. Roberta Tovey was remarkable, really selling the child-genius character well. The major thing I disliked, however, was the design of the TARDIS interior. Maybe Im just overly fond of the roundels and the iconic center console, but my god, that first iteration was such an eclectic mess! It felt like they were traveling in an old arcade that someone had taken a baseball bat to. Cushing’s Dr. Who is a delight, even if he barely resembles The Doctor as we know him at all. The closest mainline Doctor to him would probably be Troughton or Smith, but certainly not Hartnell. All in all, I love these films, and would gladly rewatch them again for a quick fix of science fiction fun.
